It has not been mentioned but on my radio there are two thumb screws which are on the parcel shelf either side of the metal grill which screw into the metal frame the radio sits on. The screw holes for these thumb nuts can be seen in the photos already shown. If you remove these thumb nuts it allows the front wooden radio panel to be removed with the radio still attached. The thumb screws are the same as those that hold the fuse/gauge panel in place.

Cass
if you look at the picture of the radio brackets, there is a center threaded "ear" on each bracket top.

Do those ears line up with the thumb screws you are referring to?

my car does not have them and there are no signs or holes.

maybe it was a later improvement?

Yes those threaded holes line up with the thumb screws. Under the parcel shelf carpet either side of the chrome grill there are two dimples which the heads of the thumb nuts fit into. These then screw down into the two threaded holes on top of the radio bracket to hold it in place. Attached are a couple of photos showing my thumb nuts in place.
Taking these photos has prompted me to remove my parcel shelf and repaint it as I had a leak on my front screen rubber and the water came in and got the parcel shelf carpet wet. Dry now but a little bit of surface rust on the metal shelf which will not do even if no one can or every will see it.

Yes Rob ~ That is correct. My upholstery guy had my shelf powder coated Black while all the seat frames etc. were being coated in Dove Grey.

Anyone else with these dimples under the carpet on the parcel shelf with the thumb screws or is this just on my car being a 1967/68?
Sorry posted over the top of you Glyn.

my carpet is glued in that area, no signs of anything going through it! however I do remember the dimples were there when I removed the console and parcel shelf, but there were no thumb screws. I just didn't know what the dimples and the holes were for.

I have a place near that sells surplus aircraft hardware, yes, AIRCRAFT HARDWARE. They have chromed and brass thumbscrews in many sizes.

I will find out what thread size the bracket thread is and in my next trip there I will buy them ALL !

What is confusing is that the thumbscrews are hidden under the carpet, in my opinion they should be over the carpet, visible, otherwise how is anyone going to know they are there?

All 3 of my cars (2 donors) have the same parcel shelf as Rob's (all 1965/66 era) ~ with the 2 thumbscrews.

The chrome vent over the radio is held down by 4 plastic rivets (some clear, some black dependent on year) that push into drillings & trap the carpet. It is intended that you pop off the chrome vent & raise the carpet for access. Heater vent control cables also run there.

Many restorers erroneously screw down the vent cover with self tapping screws. Others place the vent tabs under the carpet. Both wrong!

What I would like to know is if Old Number One ~ (Understand oldest RHD resides in New Zealand) ~ even had the chrome radio breather vent for cooling.

At the time of brochure development for the S Type it did not exist.

Some early cars did have the chrome finger tab under the glove box lid lock.

Early cars did not have the chrome escutcheons under the seat reclining levers.

Early cars had no coat hooks ~ etc.

The upholstered roll & centre wood piece on the parcel shelf changed in dimensions over the years along with the chrome end trims on the wood piece. (I know ~ I have both ~ but no clue of when the change took place)

Wood treatment (shape) & positioning of the B Pillar interior lights also changed over time.

I rather like the early intended horn push.

I am sorry? All three of your cars. You obviously have too much room at your house. I hate you people who can afford to have a donor car and the room to keep it. If I had a donor car here in the UK within a couple of years it would just be a pile of rust on the driveway and the wife plus the neighbours would be complaining. lol.
