Post by jonesdl »

I need to work out how to get the original radio out without too my hassle as I wanted to get it changed to FM, there is a guy in Reading who can do the conversion I understand not too far from me.

removal of the radio requires removal of a number of parts some of which are very delicate and some can create problems if not marked before removal.

First part to remove is the black plastic finisher over the three buttons for AIR-HEAT-OFF vacuum switcher.

Insert a very thin blade between one corner of the black plastic finisher and the chromed plate behind it.

prise it slightly out, then do the same at the opposite corner, then go back and forth each corner until it is freed. This black plastic piece has two delicate plastic Pins behind it which break off easily if handled roughly.

If you succeed in removing this part without damage, Congratulations! Pull the chromed plate and you will see two screw holes on each side of the Buttons.

remove those two screws and the radio wood console is now semi-freed from the leather console opening.

Remove the Radiomobile black knobs by pulling them off the shafts, then pull the chromed bezels off the shafts. There might be two clear nylon washers on the chromed bezels and behind the black knobs, do not lose them!

Then remove the two 13mm black plastic Nuts
over each shaft.

At this point, try to push the Radiomobile back from the wood panel by pushing on the Shafts.

If no movement, then chances are the radio is also held in place with 8mm bolts to brackets behind the wood panel, brackets which themselves could be fastened to the body of the car. This is how the factory installed the Radiomobiles, almost impossible to remove, so you will need to get a flashlight and look behind the leather console to find the 8mm bolts screwed to the Body which are screwed vertically UP.

Removing those too 8mm bolts will let you remove the wood radio panel complete with radio BUT:
.now you have to deal with 3 vacuum HOSES attaching to the Vacuum Switcher.

You need to MARK those hoses to each nipple at the switcher so you can get them back where they were. In my caseI applied stickers to each hose and to the corresponding nipple or "port" at the switcher. One marked "A" to "A.", the center one marked "B" to "B", and the third one left unmarked.

Then you can pull each hose from each nipple and continue pulling the wood radio panel out to disconnect the radio wires. Until finally you can pull the whole assembly out.

GOOD LUCK !

I think I bought the last new one of these in the world from David Manners ~ certainly his last one at the time. It's a crap design & you will almost certainly break off the plastic pins if you try to lever it out. You are better off removing one front seat & removing the console as a complete item with shelf. Then working is much easier. Trust me ~ this might sound longwinded ~ it's the easy way. The console is simple to get out.

I replaced my original AM radio by removing the entire center console complete with the parcel shelf attached, because I wanted to add new speakers and baffles to each side of the center console, and this required moving / remounting the rear seat's air vent on-off Valve further to the rear.

as it came from the factory, the Valve is smack in the way of a second speaker, so it required careful surgery but I did it.

I installed the am-fm-cassette radio from my 1984 XJ-6 which I had replaced with a 1986 unit. Yes I
still play cassettes, don't like CDs.

my car came with a power antenna toggle spring switch which can be seen in the 4th picture.

The console was designed for mono. 1 speaker & if you ordered the fancy set up 2 speakers with one in the rear parcel shelf & a front to rear balance control. The second console grill was just to look pretty.

I also added 7.5" inch marine Clarion speakers at the front "kick" panels where there are round factory cutouts already. Perfect for larger speakers.

The Jaguar stereo sounds awesome with its 4 speakers.

I'm a high end audio guy with a purpose built listening room. Long gave up on crappy car sound in such a hostile environment for audio.

I went the originality route with a brand NOS LW/MW radio & powered hidden antenna. 1 speaker.

so am I, and I am a musician. All my cars have to have superb stereo systems. In the US, AM stations suck big time and their sound is primitive.

the picture below is not my car but it shows the mounting screws for the entire parcel shelf and center console.

first the front seats need to be removed for comfort while working and to leverage the entire assembly out of the car.

the two cables controlling the front air vents under the parcel shelf must be disconnected beforehand.

the chromed grille over the radio must be prised off, and the Temperature Lever Cable must be diaconnected beforehand too.

Overall, this is a delicate and complicated job, and things need to be marked so they go back exactly where they were before disassembly.

Yes ~ I have no intention of listening to it. Even the best car sound sucks & is hopelessly inaccurate.

I know that picture well with the inaccurate door panels. I've had my console & parcel shelf out a number of times sorting out gear change & other minor issues, voltage inverters etc. It's pretty easy once you are used to it.

These posts and pix are hugely helpful for those of us who've stared at the service manual instructions for removing the centre console and wondered what it is talking about. Thanks very much.
