That is the Otter switch, a thermostatic switch that controls the starting carb solenoid by grounding it at this switch. Many have bypassed this switch with a switch on the dash that controls the starting carb AKA the "hisser" or AED, (automatic enrichment device).

Many thanks John

Your AED must be set up for manual control since there is no wire connection to the Otter switch showing. Yours shows a being mounted with three studs rather than small bolts. Is this common or a conversion? I like this set up as it would make it easier to remove the nuts rather than the small bolts that go into the aluminum thermostat housing.

yes my car has been converted, long before I bought the car . Again with regard to studs rather than bolt bolts I don't know. If they were always bolted I guess that it has been changed possibly when the manual choke was fitted.
