The white plastic ring is essential as this is what the two self cancelling levers touch. Did you not have this on the old switch you removed or had this part broken up?

No sign of a plastic ring at all. It had two plastic arms that I think were activated by a finger-like projection on the steering column. Only part of one arm remains.

That is the older type mechanism AKA ~ C25255 or 34563. That plastic spring mechanism usually breaks requiring a new one to be riveted in. Lucas used to make repair kits with the plastic spring & 2 rivets. I have no idea if they were self cancelling. If they were they had a clamping ring on the column with a protruding "finger" for cancelling.

This is what I have & is my NOS spare. My original shows some wear but I only located this NOS unit after my car was finished. I was delighted because sun exposed plastic parts become brittle & break.

I think the issue is mainly that my car is an automatic and it can only use a half ring turn signal mechanism because the transmission shifter is on the opposing side. Barratts have hopefully identified the part that I need. When I get a part that fits - and works - I can worry about the wiring some more.

I don't have a picture of mine but I am pretty sure without taking the cowling off that mine is the same as in your photo Glyn.

I'm pretty sure you are right Rob. Please don't go to the trouble of removing the cowling.

Thanks for the great photos. The defective one I took off is exactly the same as your first three pics, except that it only has one plastic arm left. My car is a 65. Maybe I should be looking in the Mark 2 section? Anyway, the expert at Barratts says that he will send me the correct one, but I am a tad skeptical.

I found a YouTube video of a chap making one of those plastic spring pieces with a 3-D printer; but taking the whole unit apart and reassembling it looked like a pain. Here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXBvRcp4-vM

Here is my very late 65 during build. It was No 4 off of the SA production line & is actually 1966 Model Year car. Sorry these pics were not taken for this purpose & fall apart when blown up. Just to show the cancelling plastic ring in place. Remember where you have an Auto shifter our Manual OD cars have the Overdrive switch that I show here. (cass' car is an Auto) This is pre fitting the cancelling ring shown fitted in the E Type pic above.
