Moss gearbox

Post by Norton »

Hi.
I have 64 S-type, manual OD Moss gearbox. I have come across a Moss box w OD from a 64 Mk 2. Can anyone confirm that theese boxes are identical or not?

I think they are the same but I don't have a Mk2 parts book to check the numbers, perhaps some one on here can verify .

According to my parts books the Mk2 gearbox assembly (ie the whole gearbox) is part number C14821
The S Type gearbox assembly is part number C24215
The gearbox casings on both Mk2 and S Type are part number C19208.

Both gearbox assemblies are stated as being the "GB Series". It states they both have shaved gears identified by prefix "GB" and by suffix "JS" to the serial number.

Unfortunately it does not state what gearing each gearbox is fitted with but the casings are the same so physically they are interchangeable and I would assume that the gearing for the 3.8 Mk2 and the 3.8 S Type would be the same or very close to the same. Having said that I was always taught never to assume anything.

Thank you.
A lot of identical parts numbers so I assume ( even if I also know to never assume anything ) they are interchangeable. The box in question is available at a very reasonable price, think I buy and find out. Mk 2 is a little lighter than S-type, maybe gearing is a little higher. But if so its for the better. OD S-type have 3.77diff ( 3.54 non OD ), 1 gear is way to low on modern roads. At least 4. gear are identical..
Nothing particular wrong with my box, just old and slow. But I guess they all are.
