Rear diff oil change

Post by cass3958 »

Whilst under the car today working on the propshaft I decided to do an oil change on the rear diff. I remember doing this from when I built the car and remember I made a mistake at the time.

My mistake was that I fitted the rear subframe and diff dry and then when I came to fill it with oil, it was a bugger to get the plastic bottle of diff oil up high enough to get the oil in the hole. It went everywhere and it is very smelly.

Draining the old oil was not a problem but then I had to set up the following device to be able to get the new oil in.

I used a length of garden hose which I fed through the wire wheel to the filler hole in the diff. I fitted a small funnel to the garden hose and then cable tied this to the door handle to keep it higher than the diff.

The diff takes 1.5 litres of oil and I had two one litre bottles. Poured the first into the funnel and it went down the hose into the diff. I then poured half of the second bottle into the first so I knew I had exactly ½ a litre and this was then poured into the funnel. Removed the hose and checked with a finger that the oil was just level with the hole and put the filler plug back in. Jobs a gooden as they say and not a single drop of oil spilt.

I think you are going about this the hard way. I use one of those pump oil cans with a flex pipe and nozzle. Their capacity is not great so it will take a number of refills of the can but It is clean and neat overall. I also filed the square filler plug sides a bit to fit a 7/16th inch open end wrench.

Cass

Buy yourself a large syringe. Worth their weight in gold for refilling axle…….and gearbox and power steering. Also useful if you need to remove some oil. Costs about £15 on the web.

£48.98?????????
I think my second hand piece of garden hose and a £1.50 oil funnel from Halfords is a cheaper option and works just as well.

Pump made to fill gearhouse on outboard boat engine. Threaded at end to fit gear house, but thin enough to put it in refiller hole on diff. 6 - 7 £ here in Norway.

I paid a hell of a lot less than that from Amazon USA. 3 years later it is only $13.99. Scroll below still available at $12.99 from another vendor.

IIRC I paid $10. It works a treat. 49 Pounds is a rip off.

Friend brought it over for me. So no shipping & tax.

A very similar 200cc syringe is available on Amazon U.K. for £8.95, including delivery.

That's more like it Richard. I'm surprised how well made the thing is.
