That OD looking solenoid is standard on the DG. As said above the intermediate speed hold.
1965 Jaguar 3.8 S Type, Sync4, OD, PAS, BRG/Biscuit on chrome wires.

Yes, it is the intermediate speed hold for the DG automatic gearbox. Biggest issue I have heard of with these is leakage. There is an bellows inside that protects the solenoid from transmission fluid and this can perish. The good news is, this one looks pretty leak free from the picture.

Here's a pic of the underside of mine. Not sure how useful it will be. My anti-creep solenoid is hydraulically disconnected - somewhat crudely I admit. Apparently they were fitted because drivers were not used to cars moving without them touching any pedals! How quaint!
