Quilter's Oregon 1965 S Type

Post by John Quilter »

My mother bought this white with black interior MOD 3.8S in February 1966 as a just over one year old car that had a date of dispatch from the works on 5 November 1964. It’s 105 chassis numbers after the introduction of the fully syncho gearbox. This purchase was at my advice, even as a high school senior. My father, who had always driven Morris Minors, was skeptical but since it had disc wheels, a manual gearbox and a nice Blaupunkt radio he condescended to its purchase which was at about 75% of its price new. As a Rear Admiral he always named his cars, this one became “The Jewel”. My mother drove the car for the next 8 years and upon her death my father drove, and enjoyed it, for the next 26 years at which time I inherited it in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was relocated by me to Eugene Oregon, USA in 2010. Drives beautifully at 168K miles. Not a 100 point show car as it has always been driven and never off the road for any period of time. Simply well maintained, garaged, and, given its age and beauty, driven my me sympathetically, as a retired 32 year career employee of the US arm of British Leyland and Jaguar Land Rover North America. Modifications are a pusher radiator fan, (thermostatically controlled), an XJS steering rack conversion, a high mount LED stop lamp and a manual override control for the AED. It shares the garage with two Morris Minors, a convertible, and four door saloon, a 1990 XJ6, an Austin America and a 1951 MGTD.[img][img][img]

Welcome to the forum John. Lovely car and very well maintained by the shut lines and body work. I like what you have done with the air intake. Is that just polished steel or chromed. Jose who has sadly left this forum now had painted his air intake the same red as the outside of the car which I thought looked good but as my car is also old English white but the creamier colour to yours I did not think the white would go well under the bonnet. I like this effect though and might steal the idea.

I had the air filter assembly chromed decades ago when chroming was not so pricey. Also did the lid to the power steering reservoir, battery bracket, shield for the starter relay, clutch and brake reservoirs, coil bracket, radiator cap and band around the generator. I guess I really went overboard but it looks nice and gives me something else to polish up from time to time.

This is a Photo taken from the Archives section of Jose's air filter painted the same colour as the car. Very neat but as I said possibly would not look good in Old English White.

That's a lovely car and a great story, John.

Well done on keeping it in the family and on the road, in such fine condition.
