Changing from Positive to Negative earth

Post by cass3958 »

I run a 1968 S Type which is still on the original generator and positive earth system. I have thought several times of converting it to Negative earth but electrics are not my strongest point. I bought some LED dash lights to fit and found they were polar sensitive to negative earth so none of them worked on my system.
The two main reasons I can think of for converting to Negative earth would be the ability to run a modern radio/CD system and to convert to an alternator. Unfortunately with mine running PAS the pump is on the back of the generator and buying an alternator with a PAS pump take off is very expensive.

Can someone write a definitive specific description on how to convert the S Type from Positive to Negative earth for the forum. When I first got my car I converted to an electronic distributor and got rid of the old points. I am not sureif it was a specific Positive earth one so can this be changed over to negative earth?
As far as I can tell from reading on other forums its a matter of changing the polarity of the generator, swapping the coil leads over, swapping the leads over on the ammeter and changing the leads over on the battery. Is it this simple or is there more that needs to be changed over?

Cass, it is so easy it is silly. Also, I found that in Negative Earth mode the electrics seem to be livelier and brighter. No, I haven't smoked anything, perhaps it was the new battery I installed at the same time. My S type is still on the Generator/Dynamo, I've not converted it to alternator because every alternator story I've read comes with many caveats and I don't want to create any problem.

1) Follow the re-polarizing instructions here: (I reccomend you install a new Negative Ground BATTERY).

2) Then, follow up with the following article at JCNA:
