Glyn I have seen this type of pump you are calling a Saginaw on the 420. It is bolted to the side of the engine over the top of the distributor and is powered by a belt coming off the water pump. Makes getting to the top of the distributor cap a bitch of a job. The pump sits below the reservoir. Are you sure that this was fitted to the later S Types. As you know mine is quite a late Sept 1967 manufactured car and I have the old Eaton pump off the back of the Generator.
I believe this Saginaw pump was fitted as the 420 was negative earth and had an alternator fitted without the takeoff on the back for the Eaton PAS pump. The S Type was still Positive earth and running off the generator up to the end of production as I believe. I have not seen any manuals stating the S Type was converted to Negative earth, fitted with an alternator or this PAS system at the very end from factory but am willing to be educated.
Attached are a couple of photos of the 420 PAS pump and where it is fitted on the 420 engine.
