Hello All
Does anyone have a good diagram on the wiring configuration on the starter solenoid. I bought a new one from SNG and the posts are not the same as the rogue solenoid I took off. Need to know which post the neg wire from battery goes onto and where the starter button wire goes. (Pos earth)

hi,
would you post a closeup picture of both solenoid posts side-by-side? That will help understand the differences.

there is an eBay seller who has what appears to be the original style starter solenoid for $58.00. These solenoids were used in many other British cars of the 1960s and Jaguars up to 1968.

Attached ( I hope) are pics of the two solenoids. The old one came with the car and doesn't even have the correct mounting bracket that aligns with the holes on the firewall. Any advise on which poles to use on the new one would be appreciated.

Mark here is photo of the solenoid on my car.
The large black cable on the left goes to the battery. The large black cable on the right goes to the starter. There are then three smaller cables. One comes from the starter button to the smaller of the fittings. Of the other two I think from memory one goes to the key, on to the starter button on the dash and back to the small cable in the middle of the solenoid. The other one goes to the AMP meter on the dash which in turn goes back to the regulator which is feed by the generator. Best check the wiring diagram and conduct a continuity test on the small cables to confirm this.
The idea being that the solenoid is always live and if you push the button on the solenoid it will turn the engine over but it will not start as there is no circuit via the key in the ignition. If you turn the ignition key and push this button on the solenoid it will start. If you turn the key and push the starter button on the dash the car will start but without the key turned the dash starter button will not work.
The cable from the AMP Meter is recharging the battery as the engine is running.
Hope this helps.

that "wrong" start solenoid is one interesting part. It looks like something out of a Cessna aircraft.

OK great info. I think from your photo and some testing I can figure this out. As always you guys are a good resource.
