failed MOT but only on the rubbers

Post by Horse Power Junkie »

Today I replaced the front subframe connection rubberplates and the engine mount rubbers. Bit of a fiddly job, but succeeded. I now have to replace the rubbers for the rear axel. My plan is to hoist the car so the wheels (and axel) come free. Will this provide enough wiggling room to replace these mounts? Thanks in advance.

This should work as the axle is only held on by four bolts through the rubber mounts but you might have to release the radius arms at the front or you might put a lot of strain on the radius arm bushes. The only other thing attaching the axle to the car is the flexi pipe for the brakes which is on the drivers side but there should be enough play in this to allow you to raise the body to change the axle mounts.

In my experience yes as I had to do it once with the axle in place. Just make sure everything is well supported and only drop the axle as far as needed to wiggle them in. It might be an idea to remove the exhaust hangers on the centre boxes so as not to strain them and keep an eye on the flexible brake pipe as not to strain that.

Rob posted above just as I was writing this.

No official MOTs for the S Type Jaguars in the UK anymore but I will still be taking mine in to the garage every year for a check up and keeping an eye on those rubber mounts.

We have currently cars with 30+ years every other year, and cars from before 1960 no MOT at all. Legislation is about to change, plans in NL were all cars with 50+ years no MOT , but in Belgium they have now 50+ cars every 5 years for MOT, our legislation change was planned for May, and didn't happen. I suspect we'll get a European regime for testing like they now have implemented in Belgium. We'll see.
