That does sound interesting, Nigel. And you say the next couple of days. Sounds good.

My main aim is to make the engine more S Type and less noisy/E Type. It shouldn't be as audible in the cabin as it is currently. It's my second S and the first purred: this barks.

Might that not be just as much down to missing insulation/anti-drum on the bulkhead/floor/tunnel? And/or the routing of the exhaust? And/or the condition of the engine itself?

One thing I will give the black Barratts closed cell firm foam rubber type material in their "Insul" kit is that it's sound deadening capabilities are most effective.

Re Orlando's comments. Make absolutely sure that all scuttle/firewall, grommets, blind grommets & plugs are in place & in good condition.

+1 to that. There are loads of them, in really obscure places, too. On DG automatics, there is a big one in the gearbox tunnel, too.

Sounds like I’ve got a lot of checking to do! Probably most locations are beyond my knowledge/capabilities.... It’s a noisy S-type, though, so I do need to give this a really good go. I’m onto the Barratts order, too, although there’s quite a long lead-time on that ‘insul’ kit.

OK I have received the samples of the insulation as per previous post.

A couple of photos, the new product is the lower ones and seems to look like the original surface finish and is quite stiff this is compared to a standard type of closed cell foam above. It has a denser close cell foam structure and is self adhesive backing also suitable for higher temperatures. It is available by the metre from https://www.campervaninsulation.co.uk I suggest if you are interested in it then contact them direct and have a sample sent mentioning the new under bonnet material suitable for classic cars. I will be ordering enough to do my XJ6 to start with.

Is this stuff flame proof Nigel as the original Jaguar material which was the fibre weave was supposed to be flame proof. I am not so sure of the top material in the photos which is more of a sound proofing dense foam material.

Just set fire to a piece and the surface self extinguishes catching for a second, the inner foam seem inert.

I wouldn't trust the original material to be fire proof with all the oil that has gone into it over the years.

Interesting. Thanks for that Nigel. I see it is available in 6mm & 10mm. Let us know how it goes with the XJ6.

Yes, interesting. Thanks, Nigel. I'll be interested to see how you get on with it on the XJ - and whether the self-adhesive holds.

Is the product actually on the website? If yes, please could you post a link? Thanks.
