Under bonnet insulation

Post by jaguar&mg »

I think my 3.8 engine does not sound as smooth as it should, and almost certainly some under bonnet insulation (there's none on the boot-lid either) would improve things. Does anyone know if anywhere in the UK has them made-to-measure? Perhaps they have to be made up, but that would not be a personal strength, so all suggestions welcome.

Mine came from SNG Barratt in a kit for a Mk2. Black woven appearance foam rubber material that looks very neat but is not original. Original was moulded glass fibre matting that unfortunately deteriorated. Alan Wiedie on this forum has the best preserved original I have seen.

Your bonnet/hood is missing the rear pop riveted retainer strips that held the rear of the liner in place.

Some folk here have fitted hardura felt in this application that looks sort of period.

Thanks Glyn. I can't find that product on their website at the moment so maybe it's out-of-stock. It looks as if the retainers came with it?

The retainers come with it but the Mk2 used 4 rivets to mount them but the S Type uses 3 as with the original pic I show. Don't know how picky you are.

Not too picky, to be honest, but I'd like to start by actually finding the kit to order! (The boot is perhaps another issue?)

Thanks for your help.

Barratts new website is a disaster. They keep changing what they call things.

Available to order.

The boot lid has no liner. Just 3 pieces of hardura glued into the 3 triangles. Available from John Skinner.

For the boot it is crucial that the felt pad is in place over the IRS under the boot mat. And that the Hardura felt is in place in the boot behind the back seat & under the rear parcel shelf that you can just see starting to fall off in the above picture.

Thanks Glyn — this is all very useful.

What are the foil insulation pads available on the same website page?

Those foil liners are an alternative. (forgot about them & did not notice). They are not very pretty things. Your choice. They might suit your colour scheme just fine.

I might have some news on the bonnet insulation soon as I'm waiting for a sample from a firm that has a new product coming out in the next couple of days - keep you posted.

That sounds interesting, Nigel.

I'm not convinced that the hardura I used is the answer really. It looks okay, but behaves very differently from the original fibreglass, in that I suspect it reflects heat rather than absorbs it and probably does the same with sound.
