Engine bay notice or decal missing.
Re: Engine bay notice or decal missing.
Dave,
a picture posted by Orlando shows a S type with a battery cover, and it leads me to think the hole in the firewall was for a bracket or holdown bracket for the battery cover. Here's the picture:

Re: Engine bay notice or decal missing.
Jose,
The battery cover has its own hold-down clamps, one at each end, which I always assumed clipped onto the batteries supplied at the time. Never could find a contemporary battery that allowed use of the clamps.

Correct Alan.
The original Lucas battery had an 'edge' on each side that the battery cover clamp could attach under and hold the cover tightly over the battery.
Cheers

Re: Engine bay notice or decal missing.
Going back to the Decals. I know Glyn on page 2 of this topic listed the decals that he believes should be in the engine bay of the S Type as
Coil
Brake Fluid
PAS reservoir lid
Horn Relay
Fan motor (red or white)
Battery (LUCAS)
Made in England some cars
Side of regulator cover that I doubt you will find
Trico & Screenjet older cars
Running In
Trip reset
Bluecol "U" ~ some cars
Wiper Motor ~ some cars
But there is not a definitive set that you can buy. Not knowing what some of these decals look like is a problem if I am trying to buy them individually so is there a possibility that some one can photograph each of the decals list above and post these on to the topic so if someone decided to search for the decals individually they would know what they were looking for please. Photos of their position and orientation would be very helpful.
Also though not a decal but then neither is the Made in England badge I have a badge on the inner left hand wing in the engine bay which states my car is fitted with seat belt anchorages which complies with “SPECn. BS. Au. 48-1965” It also states it is “Jaguar cars Ltd Coventry England.”

Re: Engine bay notice or decal missing.
That's what we are trying to achieve here Rob. Thanks for the addition. We will consider this decals & plates. I still have some searching to do.
SA Cars had a CDA Plate riveted to the LHS inner fender & a plate similar to your seatbelt plate with Jaguar Cars South Africa in the front bonnet channel on Blackheath produced cars.

Re: Engine bay notice or decal missing.
Dave,
the XJ-6/12 battery holdown from 1968 to 1992 has two side hooks that extend down to the battery tray AND it has a third center screw that screws into the firewall. The very early XJ-12 holdown had four "legs".
It is simply a possibility, not that it IS the reason for that hole, someone could have adapted some type of battery holdown.
The pictures below show the third mounting point of some XJ-6 and 12 battery holdowns.

Re: Engine bay notice or decal missing.
Lucas 2SJ Screenjets. I'm hoping that Alan Wiedie & others can step in & help us here. As I said earlier in the thread I have not researched these things. Decals are all over the place colour wise. I don't know which apply to what. I am led to believe that blue filler cap models are the early ones & rare. Please guide me if this is not true. Black filler lid models seem more prevalent. With fading & photographic colour shift/push etc. taken into account there does seem to be some uniformity in the decals on original units.

Guidance please from those that own cars pre the 5SJ plastic bottle.

Re: Engine bay notice or decal missing.
Looks Guys, I didn't want cause any friction in asking my original question, I was just interested on what could have been there, was it a Jaguar, Dealer or Owner plate with the drilled hole. We have established it's not Jaguar, possibly a dealer or owner, so, as Henlys in London has finished and the original owner is now in a nursing home I understand, I am not going to find the answer. It's possibly the best idea to close this thread and perhaps create as Rob suggested, a new thread for S Type engine bay Decals which Glyn can possibly start when time allows, which everybody can feed into as required with the country of build information and year of build accordingly. Hopefully this will calm things down, as John indicated in his thread we are all S type enthusiasts with different ideas on how we use our cars and what condition we keep them in.
I am a new owner of my S type bought June 2018 and really value this forum plus of course the knowledge of it's members and with quite a few questions coming up the last thing I want is cause any problems, so I would appreciate if you can take on board my suggestion regarding this thread.
Many thanks
Dave J.
