Front side lights

Post by Albion »

Hi, this being my first post on this forum I would like to wish everyone the best for the coming New Year.

Having just started reassembly after a long journey to have the body work and paint done, I encountered my very first problem due to the fact that I had dismantled vehicle a few years ago. I have attached a picture of the front side light housing. The issue is with the chromed screws that keep the chrome surround in place. There are two square holes for the screw to pass from, but I wonder if there should be any fitting in these holes as otherwise the scews are still loose even if I put a washer behind.

What you are missing are the spring steel fasteners which slide on to the body and allow the screw to fasten up tight. It is called a cage nut in the parts manual part number BD33998 and there are four of them. SNG Barrett should hold them but they are not listed under that part number. Call them and see what they have.
If not they can be found in various sizes on ebay. Here is a link to some I have just found for you in M6 and a photo of the item although the original part will be in an imperial thread. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20pcs-Spring ... 9675&hash=

But those are used for self tapping screws. In this case the two chromed screws both have tread and nut.

You will see the one I have shown a photo of has a nut attached so is threaded not self tapper. You just have to find one with the correct imperial thread or use a metric pan head screw with a metric cage nut.

You can get plastic inserts today that the correct Knurled head, Chromed, black sheathed side light/parking light machine screws will screw into. One shorter chrome screw & one longer chrome screw. There are no loose nuts.

Excuse the tacky picture. I've got a good one somewhere but can't find it. The black shrouds for the screws are no longer available. I used black heat shrink after re-chroming.

would it not be simpler to find 2 nuts and washers that fit the screws and just hold the nut behind with a socket and ratchet while the screw is tightened?

also since the holes are square, you might get lucky with license plate push-on nyloc nuts.

What about the side lights, how are they held in place? I think I am missing some kind of bracket to hold all in place. Must go back searching the boxes!
