Intermediate speed hold

Post by maurizio ortodossi »

Guys

One stupid question.
When drive the car on motorway, the position of intermediate speed hold should be on position OUT, correct ?? Since sound a problem, today i have disassembled the switch and i found that the switch is marked with ON, but assembled on left side, matching the position IN. So i suppose that is uncorrect, because NO should match OUT.....

Pls help me !!!!!!!

Tnks and have a great week end

IN means ON (Italiano: Su ?) (Español: Prendido)

OUT means OFF ( Italiano: Fuori ?) (Español: Apagado)

It is a Second Gear Hold switch. It prevents the automatic transmission from shifting to Third Gear via (through) a Solenoid.

It is used for climbing steep hills, or in very slow traffic. I don't understand why Jaguar called it "Intermediate Speed Hold", when in reality it is NOT "speed anything".

I had problems remembering to turn it OFF, so I added an LED to the "IN" / "ON" position of the switch, to have a visual reminder. sometimes I was doing 70 miles per hour in Second Gear haha!

do you mean the automatic transmission does not shift to 3rd gear by itself with the switch OFF?

As far as I am aware and I am no expert in Automatic gearboxes, I will leave that box of tricks to the real expert, but there are a set of bands in the gearbox which act like clutches and allow the gears to change seamlessly. If these bands are worn or stretched then the gearbox can either as yours is doing, hold a gear too long or change with a jump or possibly even change too early. The bands are adjustable but only from the bottom once the oil pan has been removed from the gearbox. An expert would be able to adjust them to the correct tension or possibly even change them if they are worn but that will require stripping the gearbox out.
Below are a couple of links to the heritage parts manual which firstly have an exploded view of the bands in the gearbox and the second link is to the page where the parts are described with parts numbers.

Hope this helps.

As long as it is on the full mark you should not have a problem only when it is not showing on the dipstick or well above the mark should you worry. The dipstick on my 3.4 S Type has three marks. The first is for the 3.4 the second for the 3.8 and the third for the 4.2 engine. I am not sure why the 4.2 needs more oil than a 3.4 as the sump is the same size, its the same oil pump and the oil ways are all the same.
Having low oil level will affect your oil pressure as if there is not enough oil in the sump for the oil pump to suck up you will get air in the system and the engine will wear out. On the other hand if you overfill the engine with oil there is a possibility that the bottom of the piston can hit the oil in the sump and this will destroy your engine quick than no oil.
My neighbours daughter put some oil in her new car one day shortly after she had passed her test. She filled the engine up with oil until she could see it level with the filler cap in the rocker cover. Absolutely destroyed her engine when she started it up in less than 5 seconds. Poor girl learnt her lesson and now knows where the dipstick is and what it is used for.
