Adwest variomatic steering box LHD

Post by cass3958 »

I have been contact by a Gent in Sweden who is looking for an Marles Adwest Variomatic LHD steering box for his S Type.

All my contacts in the UK deal with RHD cars so I need to search the USA, Canada and Europe for one.

All knowledge of one or if you know of a LHD late S Type possibly 1967/68 being broken please let me know by PM.

Other cars that had the Adwest were the Jaguar 420, 340 and 240 so if you hear of one of these being broken again please let me know.

Thanks. Rob.C.

You might want to contact Jaguar Heaven in Stockton California who are recyclers of Jaguar and Land Rover parts. They MIGHT have the box you are looking for.

You might keep in mind that the DS420 Limousine also used a power steering box up to its demise in the early 90's. The ones produced under the Ford regime had most of the oil leak faults eventually cured. It is possible that these steering boxes may be a source for S Type cars but I believe the DS 420 was not exported to USA.

The suppliers had only passed through the second weeks management inspection before they were "invited" to attend a Ford panel. I was a guest on one of these early occasions as I was having brand new DS 420's delivered leaving oil drips on workshop floors from steering boxes. At the then £66,000 per copy I was not a happy fleet engineer, a family saloon was £4000 / 5000.

Also remember that the Marles Varamatic Bendix (Adwest) power-assisted steering was introduced on the 4.2-litre version of the Mk X Jaguar in October 1964, followed by the 420G. First car globally to use them.

Plenty of them were LHD & shipped to the US.
