Anyone recognize this item?

Post by RollyTG »

I found this in the spare wheel well of my S-type. Any clues? Am I missing some vital part? It's 4.5 inches long.

I know I have seen this before but I am struggling to place it without climbing over my car which I will do in the morning for you.

My initial thought is that it is the bolt that goes through the narrow end of the Radius arm and attaches the radius arm to the wishbone. Part number C17149/1. Just a guess until I have a look tomorrow.

Other thoughts are;

It might be the pin that goes through the automatic gearbox spring on the gearbox mount. That has a screw thread at one end but I think the other end is plain with a hole through the shaft for a pin.

It looks like a rear leaf spring shackle bolt but of course the S Type does not have leaf springs.

Is this something that you have just found in the boot having placed it there and forgotten about it or has it come off something in the boot and fallen into the wheel well?

I just found it in the wheel well. On closer inspection it looks a little bit home made, so maybe it is some kind of bodgied up tool. The car came with a box of bits and pieces and that could have fallen out of it at some point. One of the bits and pieces in the box is a generator with PS pump attached, which gives me hope that the PS has been overhauled at some point. The hoses look quite clean and new, so fingers crossed there.
