John as far as I am aware the Chassis number beginning 1B or P1B if you have PAS is stamped on the VIN plate on the bulkhead and as you have found on the slam panel. In some cases the chassis number is stamped with number and letter blocks and on other cars it is etched in by hand with a dremel on the slam panel.

All the numbers for the Chassis Engine, gearbox and body are on the VIN plate but they are repeated:

Engine number starting 7D for the S type is stamped into the head just in front of the spark plug well. This means if you change the head but keep the block and pistons you get a new engine number.

Gearbox number, depending which one you have, is on a plate riveted on the side of the gearbox. On the BW35 it is on the left side of the gearbox. Normally it starts with JBN or JBC for the early cars and FG for the later BW35 box.

Body number which starts with 4B for the S Type is on a small plate riveted to the rear valance under the rear bumper on the right hand side.

thank you for the extra info , because of the paint on the slam panel and my sitting height I have never seen it before.
I know its a bit naughty but I have had some labels missing so I found them on line for example the power steering label on the oil reservoir copied and printed , cut out and glued to the part with a missing label, job done and a bit naughty.
