I saw an old news clip on the BBC this evening regarding the London Trump visit and they showed a visit from Nixon back in 1969. Escorting the US official limo was two police S Types.

Thanks Nigel - good 'S'-type eyes!
There are many shots of both the black and white Met police 'S'-types in the whole clip.

Interesting photo of the dash Nigel. They have removed or the tacho was not fitted. Not even a hole in the dash where it was supposed to be.

According to DVLA SUU486F is still out there somewhere in the UK. MOT expires 24th February 2019.
Anyone have knowledge of it.
Strangely as it was a police car it was only a 3.4s and registered July 1968.
There are photos of SUU486F on the web still in its police get up at shows dated 2011.

I got those photos from a S type owner in North Carolina who brought a police S type to the US. He was restoring it but apparently he passed away before finishing it.
as far as a 3.4 vs. a 3.8, I have heard countless times that there is little difference between both engines in terms of performance and indeed the 3.4 is a "sweeter" engine and more reliable.

I have heard the same after all the 3.8 is just a bored out 3.4 where as the 2.4 was a shorter stroke. If you ever see a 2.4 engine in a Jaguar and compare it with yours you would think that the engine mounts had broken as it sits so low at the back near the bulkhead.

Interesting photo of the police dash, wonder why they never had a tacho.
I had a 3.4 S Type many years ago as well as my 3.8 and both had very similar performance, I still have a 3.4 in my shed as a spare engine that I used for a few years. The 3.8 has cylinder liners and the 3.4 does not.

do the cylinder liners make a difference? if yes, in what way?

The liners are fitted because the cylinder walls would be to thin to cope with compression pressures, if I remember rightly they are made of sintered steel.
