Air Cleaner

Post by DevilDog »

Hello Everyone,

My Air Intake and Air Cleaner were ceramic coated and the ceramic coating is now interfering with the connection between the Air Intake and the Air Cleaner End Plate. Before I start taking material off, how far does your Air Cleaner End Plate go into the Air Intake?

On a related issue, my car did not have the Air Cleaner Intake Hose. How long is this hose? Where does the bracket go to secure the hose? Does anyone have a picture of this bracket so we can make one? What is the inside dimension of your Air Cleaner Intake Hose?

Thanks so much,

P.S. Miss Kitty goes to the interior shop tomorrow. Seats are done.

Joe I had the same problem after I painted my air filter housing but rather than scrape the paint off I got some heavy grit emery paper and sanded down the inside diameter of the aluminium housing so the painted surface slid in without damaging it. This makes it so much easier as well if I want to remove the whole air filter housing from the top of the engine without dismantling it as it is a snug but not a press fit.

With regards the cold air hose bracket there are pictures of mine in situ here in this topic and I think I have an original spare in the garage if you want but I will have to go look for it before I can promise that I do have one. From memory I think the hose that I bought for my cold intake was 70mm internal diameter as the hose goes over the air intake not inside it.

I bought telescopic hose so put it on and cut it to size. It is no more than 18 inches long. The bracket is triangular in shape and is bolted to the engine front plate where the adjuster bracket for the generator is attached.

One of the parts that is no longer available is the rubber band that goes over the joint between the air intake and filter housing and the rubber band that goes over the filter housing hose and the cold air hose. Orlando and I both bought a reproduction rubber band from Alan on the forum here 18 months ago but there is no reason why these bands cannot be made up from the rubber off an old inner tube. My mate had a Healey sprite and his new wire wheels were tubeless so I took one of his old inner tubes and cut a couple of bands out of it. The rubber band was then wrapped around the hose and I sealed the ends with some rubber glue. With the crossed over lap at the bottom you cannot see it.

Perfect......thanks for the info and I HAVE one of those brackets. It is in a box somewhere. Should be easy to find. I also have the rubber connections. Got them from SNG years ago. Great tip Rob on sanding the inner connection...thanks.
Thanks everyone,

On the same subject, does anyone use the drain hoses on the air intake? Do I need them?

Parts no longer available at SNG.

15,16,17 here. Plenum chamber drains. I run them. I don't know how important they are. Possible fire hazard without them?

It May, or not be relevant, but I has a problem of engine fumes in the cabin which was only resolved when the drain tube was fitted.

I still have the original hoses on mine but they are a bit dirty and crusty. Not as pliable I would thing as they would have been new. The hoses are only clear plastic tubes so as long as you have the nipples on the bottom of the plenum intake you can buy plastic hose of the right diametre and fit them. For length they hang down to about the level of the top of the sump and there is one clip which secures them to the side of the block. As they are the plenum drains and fuel is most likely being drained through them best to get fuel resistant hose.

Just a minor point. The original tubes were black .

Interestingly I'm sure I've seen a Jaguar technical bulletin covering a number of models including Mk2 regarding fuel smell in the cabin.

Advice was to ensure that the plenum chamber & inlet manifold (steel) drain tubes were in place & in the case of the Mk2 to solder the fuel cap breather hole closed & fit a nipple & stub pipe to the fuel filler neck & fit a tube that vented under the car.

In case of the S Type our fuel caps are sealed (unvented) & a proper tank breather system fitted.
