with regard to oil leaks from the auto box, for anybody that has the BW 35 box there is an oil seal that is a known problem. The seal is located just below the inhibitor switch and is the termination end for the gear selector cross shaft , it is quite small about 3/4" inch outside diameter but is an easy fix. Plate 38 no 3, PT NO 9769. It took about a total of 3/4 hour to remove and replace on my sons Ford Zodiac.

Thanks John I will bear that in mind if mine starts leaking.

One other thing regarding drain back, were the BW 35 boxes fitted with oil coolers as it was suggested on the Rover forum to resolve drain back issues that a check valve is fitted to the return pipe on the gearbox cooler as this would stop the drainage. The gearbox has a check valve fitted in the control unit but they very rarely work.

The oil cooler for the gear box oil on my car is in the base of the radiator. I have two pipes coming from the gearbox on the right hand side, presumably feed and return, that go to the bottom of the water radiator. I do not have a separate gearbox oil cooler although I do have a power steering fluid cooler which is just a pipe with aluminium fins just in front of the sump bowl under the crankshaft pulley.
The stainless steel braided hoses are from the gearbox and the PAS cooler you can see with the fins in the photo.

The Rover cooler is exactly the same, with the cooler at the bottom of the water rad

Hi Glyn. Here's hoping I can make it through the deluge of spam. My low pressure power steering hose is leaking at the banjo connection to the pump, so I need to drain the reservoir and install a new hose clamp.

Bearing in mind your comments about the superior properties of Type F/G...
(a) Is Type F/G miscible with Dexron II, that I have in there at the moment, bearing in mind that most of it will be removed when I empty the reservoir?
(b) Or, shall I just refill with Dexron II and change at the service next May?

Yes Orlando. Type F/G fluids are miscible with Dexron II. Running on a mixture in PS application will do no harm until your next scheduled full change & will give you some of the antiwear benefits.
