SU Carburettor Float Lid Bolt

People keep asking me what size the float lid bolt is. They don't have such a socket or spanner/wrench in their toolkit & want to keep these bolts unmarred.

Some handbooks consider it a blind nut.

Or you can use one of these handy tools. A double ended adjustable spanner for the complete spanner.

I bought a set of Whitworth sockets, which are quite widely available for not much money. I also inherited some ancient Whitworth combination spanners. There are a few Whitworth bolts and nuts on the carbs.

In heavily metricated SA you cannot buy a single Whitworth tool (& people no longer understand the Whitworth system) & I recently had to wait for a set of Kennedy Imperial tools to be delivered from the UK now that I no longer have easy access to my restorers tool's. You cannot even buy an imperial tape measure here ~ fortunately I have those from my time living in the US ~ good old Sears "Craftsman"

Being a long term Benz driver my tools are metric & mainly Torx & reverse Torx.

I discovered that a 14mm wrench is pretty close.

Now that Ive looked at that yet again and thought about it, I do believe I remember going through that little dilemma. I probably used the "one handed wrench set" on it as is shown in Cass' post. On the other hand, I thought that I had read something stating that Whitworth fasteners had been phased out by the early 60s... I must have been dreaming that.
