Hi folks,

Just got the “new” bonnet back from the blasters and as you will see……..it needs a bit of work! This sort of welding Is well beyond my basic level but happily the chap looking after it is very capable so it can be recovered. I kept looking for a better example but nothing turned up. Just lucky this one was out there.

Once the welding is complete I’ll post a final picture then if nobody minds I’ll suggest we close this thread.

Regards to all,

Ian.

During the welding process you are likely to get some warping or distortion. My advice is to make sure when the welding is dome that the bonnet be offered up to the scuttle and wings and any bashing with a rubber mallet or worse a small hammer is done prior to going to paint. The bonnet is such a big item with panel gaps that are really noticeable if not sorted first. I know from experience and it was not good.

Yes, distortion is always a problem and in truth this bonnet was already distorted as a result of the corrosion. The chap doing the work explained that the welding puts the strength back into the panel at which point he can address the shaping.

It’s the Jaguar International Spares Day at Stoneleigh this Sunday and I’m still hoping a better, late model bonnet may show up.

Fingers crossed!
