1966 jaguar 3.8S

Post by JC2082 »

Hello everyone. I new to the forum. I’ve been searching for a forum to post about my friends 1966 jaguar 3.8s. He is currently downsizing his estate and asked me to research about selling the car. He is 80 years old and is not internet savvy so that’s where I come in. He has owned the car since June of 1970. I the car has been sitting for at least 30 years in his garage. The car has 64,929 miles on it. I think the reason he parked it was because it had an exhaust leak? We haven’t moved the car yet. Looks like at some point some cut a couple rectangles out on the rocker panel and the quarter panel. Think he said they did that to see if it had any rust? The windshield and rear window are out of the car. The interior looks really good. Any advice on selling it? Or the best way to sell it? Clean it up or leave it as is for that barn find look? The car was previously owned by a beat writer named Corbine Wright.idk if I spelled that right. I will have to check with him on that. She was some kind of a beat writer.Thank you for taking the time to read this. Josh

Morning Josh and welcome to the forum.

Can I ask you to post where the car is as we are an international forum with members in Europe, USA, South Africa and Australia not to mention loads of other locations. Pointless someone in the UK looking at a LHD car which is in Brazil for instance. If you could also post the details on the VIN plate for us, the chassis number, body number, the engine and gearbox number we would appreciate it. From these details we can tell a lot more about the car and possibly its history. The details will be on the VIN plate situated under the bonnet in the middle of the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay.

Unfortunately for you and your friend the cars condition dictates how much it is worth and with the condition seen in the photos although in the main good there are the issues of the holes in the sills and the external paint work. These cars can suffer from rust and if not used electrical problems. The engine is an unknown quantity having been sat for such a longtime and I think the car would require a lot of work to even get it road worthy.

S Type Jaguars are not as highly priced as a Mk2 Jaguar and a car in this condition would require something in he region of $40000 to restore it or maybe $25000 just to get it on the road in a reasonable condition. The value then would be based on the final condition and a really good S Type on the verge of a concours car would be not much more than $35000. A good running driving car might fetch $20000 and one in a poor condition but running and driving might fetch $10000. You might see S Type Jaguars for sale for a lot more than this but this is a for sale price not a purchase price. Cars offered at these high prices tend to stay for sale for a long time until the price is dropped to what the true market value is.

In the present condition I would say your car is worth no more than $5000 and would be sold to someone who intended to restore it or break it up for parts.

Sorry if you thought it was worth more.

Cass, thank you for the reply and information. We are located in Harrisburg, Pa 17112 (United States). I will work on getting more information on the car. Hopefully sometime this weekend.

If this car gets parted out, I may be interested in purchasing interior parts, such as seats, door panels, parcel shelves, center console, kick panels, etc. Mike S. in Colorado.
