I checked my fuel filter bowl today just below half full, used the S Type about 12 days ago so I assume this the normal hence the fuel pump ticks away before engaging the starter.

Orlando

“So, Norman, do you think (some of) the fuel drains (or is sucked) back into the tank(s)?”

Rob, that is correct, although some will be lost to evaporation.
My own car is not so bad in that respect and the bowl remains fairly full, but I have additional non return valves up stream of the fuel pumps. I believe these valves help prevent fuel bowl drainage although that does not give me undo concern, nor is it the reason for the valves, which are fitted to prevent tank to tank fuel transfer.
