Insulation

Post by Albion »

Good evening every one. Having soda blasted the entire car prior restoring the body shell I had to remove all insulation such as that found on the rear parcel shelf and the back separating cabin from language compartment. I did not remove that on the tunnel between front seats which is still pretty tough, and I don't remember if floor pans were covered as well. Any pictures available please?

Pictures of the front and back of my car when I stripped it out. Carpets were already stripped along with the under felt so what you see in the two photos are the sections of Hardura that were glued to the floor. When you buy a carpet set you can also buy new under felt/sound insulation which is
all cut to size and shape and glued to the floor as shown in the last photo..

All of floor & tunnel should have anti drumming sheet under the underfelt ~ originally bituminous (other than where vinyl is glued), also under rear seat & on rear parcel shelf. We replaced all with Dynamat.

At rear backrest of seat.

This car might also help. Anti Drumming pads, underfelts, vinyl & carpets all in place. Ignore incorrect door panels that are missing their roll under the wooden door pieces.

Unfortunately nobody seems to have decent & complete set of pics of the Hardura Felt that goes behind the dash on the scuttle/firewall & around the front of the tunnel & under the console. Nevertheless John Skinner can provide it.

Take a look through all the S Type interior trim sections:

For those that blast the original anti drumming pads off of floor, tunnel, rear seat base & parcel shelf. Skinner does not supply this material with common use of Dynamat & similar today.

Anti drumming material is also attached to the dome under the roof lining.

Good morning, can any one suggest any material suitable for such insulation? Preferably in larger formats to avoid joints. Also, at the base of the back bench, should not be any insulation?

I presume you mean the anti drumming material under the underfelt?

At the base of the back seat is just the bituminous anti drumming material that the factory painted over in body colour. Download & blow up this photo & you can clearly see where it is placed.

Dynamat is most commonly used today instead of bituminous pads. I used Dynamat Xtreme Black. It is self adhesive & easy to apply. It is available in a number of packs & sizes with application rollers & seam tape if required. TIP ~ from experience you don't want the pad sizes too large or you will have trouble shaping it to the floor.

I do not recall there was any kind of insulation above the lining. I remember taking off the fiber kind of thing which I still have but nothing directly on the body shell.

Mine is also a September 1967 made car with the fibre glass roof liner and I did not have a sound pads attached to the roof so do not worry about it. They are good if you instal them but Jaguar changed their minds about the design elements all the time and this was possibly one way they decided to cut costs by not installing them. I had no pads on the floor of my car ether and having read Glyn's post I might in the future add them to quieten the car down a little.
Attached are two photos of my fibre board being removed from the car and you can clearly see there are no pads attached to the metal roof.

Obviously deleted on the late cars. It's a pity. It makes a big difference. All 3 of my cars had/have it & from pictures I know Orlando's car has it. It's listed clearly in the Parts Manual.

If I was at this stage of building a car Albion I would Dynamat the floor & dome. My car is beautifully quiet.

Rob, what does heavy rain ~ large drops sound like on your roof without the pads?
