Restored spare tire Clamp / Holdown

Post by Jose »

here's my latest restoration ! :D

Picture 1 is the clamp as found from a 1966 S type

Pictures 2 thru 4 are after restoring it complete with friction bottom and handle washer to prevent metal-to-metal rubbing.
Now I have to find a designer Box for it, don't want it to get scratched!!

Your attention to detail is mind blowing, that has to be the best spare tyre clamp for an S Type in the world.
Well done !!,

Dave,

I looked at the clamp for a while, looking at its defects, and decided to somewhat improve it. Turned out nice.

What I don't understand is why the clamping part seems "upside down". It just seems to me that the smooth
part should be towards the top and only the two edges of the other side should make contact with the wheel hub center.

But all the clamps I have seen have the two edges towards the top. So I did it as it was so Glyn wouldn't start complaining. :D

Note that this clamp was used in all Jaguar all the way to 1979 in the Series 2 XJ. In 1980 a different clamp is designed for the Series 3 XJ.

Did you have fun knocking that pin out Jose? We had to apply some heat to get mine moving.

Glyn,
i used a punch and a hammer, plus lubricant spray, to drive it out. it came out easily. I think the pin is stainless steel like the screw, since it was also easy to polish to mirror finish.
