If anybody is interested, ebay under jaguar 420 on page 10 in car parts there is advertised new original set of knurled long& short screws with sleeves for the side lights, rather expensive @ £36. I have just bought a set of reproduced ones for a fraction.to some the originality is more important.

jonesdl ~ It's not a full rubber cover but a sizeable boot where the wiring enters the light fitting & protects the light from wheel thrown slush. Every exterior light on my car is NOS & it took a very long while to find them. All original fittings were pitted & front lighting heavily sand blasted.

BTW ~ agree searching 420 on eBay is more productive or 3.4S, 3.8S reduces reference to the newer S Type.

Thanks for the clarification Glyn I thought you meant a boot that covered the whole light to stop all the weather corrosion. My NOS lights came with the covers shown in your photo. A poor idea really having all that metal exposed to the weather in the wing.

Agree Dave. At least you have the boots. Most original boots are falling apart & for many years no replacement was available so the interior of the lamps rusted away. I'm told that a red and/or amber version of the same light was available & used on some old black London cabs/taxis. I've never researched it but they might have a different booting/protective arrangement.

They are only the long screws & a rip off

Better deal even if you have to re-chrome them.

But the listing does not show the cage nuts. I mean The cylindrical treads shown would still pass through the square holes For the time being, I managed to find some plastic clips as someone suggested earlier on and they seem to be ideal for the job as pet picture attached. Still, the chrome part is fine, but what about the light itself? How does it keep in place?

The Diameter of the light is wider than the hole in the wing so the light goes in from the front with the sealing ring against the round hole in the wing. The chrome surround holds the light in place and stops it falling out under braking etc hence the two screws to hold the chrome in place.
As Glyn indicated that the captive nuts are not available I am going for the plastic inserts I will check my better half's Kia as I think the rear light is held in with those size inserts & screws. I am only missing the bottom nut either side the top ones are fine.
Appreciate if anybody can advise the thread on the 4 screws U.N.F ? so I can tap any insert out, or I will ask the supplier off Ebay I bought the new set from if nobody knows.

Once again thanks as I was placing them the other way round. As for the tread I believe it to be unf, but I will try and confirm. The inserts I found are specified for Alfa, and I need to trim them a bit, but they work fine.

As for ebay, long ago they used to have "classic car parts" category as well. I wonder why they removed it, as it did complicate things for old car lovers.
