I tend to agree with Jose regarding the material under the dash shelf, when I removed the material on mine it was a very thin almost velvet in texture definitely not the same as flooring carpet. Although the carpet was a light blue, under the dash shelf was a dark blue/black. This I believe was the original colour along with a dark blue carpet but the carpet was changed to light blue on a previous resto along with paint colour.

Hi John, It is more than possible that Jaguar changed this at some time during production. While I have catalogued a lot of cars I can't profess to have seen them all, but only a good representative sample. I have provided photographic proof that carpet became the norm & was fitted to many cars. I think where the confusion keeps coming in is the comment "under the dash shelf" ~ To most this means underneath the dash shelf i.e. beneath it. Not what is applied to the dash shelf i.e. covering it or on top of it, or lining it. In this case carpet & possibly on some cars Moquette. If Moquette was used (quite a thin material as you say & I have shown in pics) I would like to know how they covered the vent control cables. Did they put felt under it? ~ It also changes the length requirement for the chromed radio vent/cover nylon studs that hold it down. (some clear & some black depending on year). If Moquette was used at one time it would seem that this applies to earlier cars. For obvious reasons my research has concentrated on 1965/66 cars. Carpet is correct for 1965 onward.

If your question is "what colour material is used to cover the dash shelf/tray (i.e. the tray visible base & back. i.e. on top of the tray)? Then it is generally floor carpet colour. I have seen the odd car in my global travels, although not common, that has had the shelf in black & always wondered whether they came from factory that way.

Use of the term "under the dash shelf" is why I provided photographs of under the dash shelf ~ sorry for the misunderstanding!

This car I know did not come from factory with black on the shelf because I queried it's owner. He changed it to black when doing a carpet replacement out of preference. IMHO he should have changed the steering column shroud that sits on the shelf around the column to black as well. It looks a bit odd in floor colour over black.

it looks horrendous with the black covering, and the kick panels were covered with carpet too!

remember Glyn, my car is unrestored, complete with all its wear and tear which I have fixed up as best as I could, but otherwise unmolested materials-wise which did not need replacing. Yes I have done lots of convenience mods but all done with Jaguar parts.

I am preparing a new thread for the boot covering behind the rear seat wall which was all wrinkled and collapsing when I bought the car.

I tailored it like the XJ-6 which is the same boot design.

Agreed Jose ~ to each his own ~ but you were not the first owner. You don't know what might have been done prior to your ownership. That's why many tend to use Dave Reilly's car as a good Browns Lane reference. He took it home from factory new. Also remember that your car if untouched is only a reference for it's particular date of production in 1964. Other & later cars will be different. I'm discussing a broad range of cars.

Some of the comments you have passed about your car such as hoop suspended (listing wire) roof lining etc. (there are many) do not make it a good restoration reference car. It seems to have oddities from standard and model year.

BTW ~ Jonathan Skinner confirms he has never seen an S Type with listing wire suspended roof lining.

Alan Wiedie & I have had long discussions about this right down to Smith's heater motor markings. He has had correct decals made up of markings & rotation arrow. On his car & David's they were originally decals. On my car & many others they were screened or stamped on in white. He has kindly provided me with artwork to have the correct stamps made. (I decided that the only way to restore my heater motor properly was to spray over the original markings.)

The reason I'm prepared to stick my neck out on occasions is 30 years of research into the S Type & not fixating on my own car. I learn new things every day. You will never fully understand these cars if you have not stripped one down to the last nut & washer & started again & even then there are sometimes more questions than answers. I probably need to state more caveats in my communication e.g. February 1965 onward where I know it. But I'm hardly the only one here that is guilty.

Anyway, now that I think I understand your question ~ to finish this discussion this is the colour matching look I would go for & no one can argue conformance to original for parcel tray. Carpet seems correct from early 1965 onward as best as I can ascertain from known cars. The parcel shelf I show in earlier pictures on this thread with carpet & a little Moguette on the rail cover was from a 1966 car.

because nobody could see it back there and that is what they had at the time.

my car has red hardura too. I thought it had been glued there before they sprayed the car but the metal is painted a different red.

Interesting ~ I've never seen red Hardura Felt used before. Only seen plenty of black. As it's unseen generally as a sound damping material I guess they used whatever they could get. Thanks for that. Another reference for my "finishes" archive. It seems to me that 1964 was a settling period where they just used what they had. 1965 production onward seems more stable interior wise until the run-out "cheapened" S Types with Ambla upholstery etc.

Well, I guess I'll stick my toe in the water and make some comments about interiors. I just heard from a fellow in the UK who recently purchased the hard-to-find rubber air cleaner-to-hose seal from me ( I have 7 left) and he mentioned seeing my name in this forum so here I am. Glad to see Glyn is still fighting the fight for originality of his spectacular S Type.

Nigel asked why the Hardura behind his dash is red. Mine is red also and I always figured it was because the car has a red interior, but maybe it's what was available at the factory at the time. My car is a 1964, P1B75188BW, which I bought in 1976 and spent a few years restoring. I always thought most things were pretty original except for the 4.2 liter E type engine!

I think it was Jose who mentioned a few things I wish he would clarify. One was Hardura mats behind the footwell side kick panels. I don't remember anything there but I suppose Jaguar could have added jute panels to the bodywork there for soundproofing? Any photos of that area? The other thing was mention of hardboard panels, one left and one right, behind the parcel shelf or dash. Any photos of those?

Speaking of photos, I have posted a few of these areas on my car. My floor carpet is fairly thin and I used the same material on the front parcel shelf. The two cover panels at the steering column and the form below the glove box are covered with Moquette same as the kick panel area behind the front seats.
