When I had my car restored a couple of years ago the body was returned from a dark blue to the original opalescent light silver blue. The mistake I made was to replace the carpet to light blue which was as fitted when I bought the car which goes well with the dark blue seats. I also re done under the front parcel tray which was either a black or dark blue. I now believe that the carpet should have been dark blue. I will keep the carpet as is but I do not like the light blue under parcel tray, so should it be black or dark blue either is acceptable but what would have been correct.

as far as I know it would have been blue, not black, unless the car was ordered with a black interior.
The parcel shelf covering material has a name but I can't recall it. It is a type of "velour".

Thanks for the reply Jose, as a part of the original carpet kit from Aldridge's they supplied material to go under the dash in light blue but it was the same carpet material and was a fight to get parts to bend to shape even when scoring and gluing. Iv mailed John skinner for a price off the under dash kit so that will be a new year order.

The Parcel tray itself is covered with the same carpet & carpet colour as the floor. The roll on the parcel shelf is vinyl same as door cards. Moquette is only used on the little scuttle rail cover on the shelf (under glovebox) & the mechanism cover around the steering column that sits on the tray.

Above the front floor carpets under the tray should be black Hardura Felt irrespective of carpet colour.

Moquette is the name of the material.

In my car moquette covers the under dash parcel shelf, not carpet.

Moquette is a shiny velour-like material, almost velvetty, quite different texture from the carpet but same color.

RU sure? Your car seems to have a number of variations from standard. How do they get Moquette to cover the vent control cables? Thick carpet battles to. Anyway below the parcel shelf is black Hardura Felt.

Your car. It does look a different colour to the carpets but it might be the light ~ ever been redone?

2nd picture through steering wheel ~ looks too thick to be what Jaguar call Moquette. Hint ~ if it is Moquette like the lower backings to the front seats treat it with bug spray. Bugs love eating the pile off of Moquette.

These seat back lower covers are upholstered in Moquette.

under the parcel shelf all my car has is painted black metal, no hardura covering it. Unless you mean the two panels on each side under and forward of the shelf. Those are of the same cardboard material as the bootlid plinth cover, except they have yute insulation on the inside side.

yes, it is not carpet, as far as I know it is original Moquette material, I had to reglue the vertical areas at the rear because it had collapsed in areas. The cream button covers I added to hide the screw and washer stains it had and to add support to the fabric.

the velvetty material used on the floor is different from the parcel shelf, it is a lot thinner in my car. More like the headlining fabric in my XJ-6 without the foam backing.

the seat backs are also the same Moquette as the parcel shelf.

As I said to Alan Wiedie ~ I have been closely studying the S Type for the past 30 years. While some things never changed it is extremely difficult to restore to any single standard as no such thing exists. Because somebody took delivery of a car new from Browns Lane & have owned it ever since is no guarantee that a car produced 3 weeks later would be identical. It likely won't be. Bring the South African assembled S Types from both the CDA Plant in East London & Cape Town Plant in Blackheath into the equation and the water is further muddied. All one can do is one's best & try to have a photographic record of new production at one time close to your production date to back up your decision as to what is "standard". Books from James Taylor et al are full of errors.

I know the 1965 MY S Type reasonably well ~ both SA production & Browns Lane. I often scratch my head & wonder how a finger pull ended up on your glove box lid in 1965 when only a very few early cars were supposed to be fitted with them as an example.
