1965 Jaguar 3.8 S Type, Sync4, OD, PAS, BRG/Biscuit on chrome wires back on the road after 30 years.

Post by Glyn Ruck »

Greetings to all. My very long labour of love comes home after nearly 30 years in resto due to my long overseas expat assignment. Restorations are never really finished but I thought I would post a few casual pics taken over the last few months ~ hi res stuff later. In retirement I've been commuting to Johannesburg (where my restorer is) to get her finished. Some pics are work in progress & I still have some corrections to make, decals to attach, fit voltage regulator shroud, breather tube elbows & clips etc. etc. ad infinitum. She is a totally rust free car & came to coast for the first time yesterday since assembly at CDA East London, SA in 1965. Colour is '76 XJ version of BRG. Pictures do not render actual colour well. More bottle green in real life. Excuse dirty tyres etc. Just done 1300 Km on the back of a transporter from Johannesburg to Llandudno, Cape Town & rained on. Thorough detailing required. Research tells me that this was the 3rd or 4th ever S Type assembled in South Africa at CDA. This forum seems to back that up. Interestingly this could well have been one of the S Types Lyons personally signed off on as being built to Jaguar standards at CDA.

Stunning restoration well done. Is the car remaining in South Africa or being repatriated to the UK?

Thanks for the kind words. She will be staying in South Africa. My intention is to put her in the concours to be rated but she is going to be driven & enjoyed. This is no trailer queen. I believe in driving & enjoying classics.

Beautiful car!
Is it a CKD car built in South Africa or an import?
Please send a Registration Form with the details so that we can get it on the Register.
Cheers,
David

Will do David. It is a CKD car build at CDA East London SA rather than Blackheath, Cape Town SA.

Been discussing some of the differences with Alan Wiedie such as bonnet catches fitted after painting here & in their original plating rather than (half) painted as they did in Brown's Lane & the long list goes on.

As I said to Alan who is helping me with the convoluted inlet pipe & sleeve... ~ I have been closely studying the S Type for the past 30 years. While some things never changed it is extremely difficult to restore to any single standard as no such thing exists. Because somebody took delivery of a car new from Browns Lane & have owned it ever since is no guarantee that a car produced 3 weeks later would be identical. It likely won't be. Bring the South African assembled S Types from both the CDA Plant in East London & Cape Town Plant in Blackheath into the equation and the water is further muddied. All one can do is one's best & try to have a photographic record of new production at one time close to your production date to back up your decision as to what is "standard". Books from James Taylor et al are full of errors.
