Derrington steering wheel

Post by oldirish33 »

This may already have been asked here, but I did not see it in a search. Has anyone fit a Derrington wheel with Mk2 hub to a 3.8S? I would like to fit one in my 3.8S using the original horn ring and center. In order to do so, need to use the special Mk2 hub. All say it's for Mk2 only, but I'm not sure it wouldn't fit a 3.8S. Had one in a MK2 I no longer have and really liked it. Any help is appreciated.

Your Editor is beginning to research an article on steering wheels and has the following preliminary information on.

The list of ‘Options’ for the ‘S’-type includes Part No. C.25198 “17” WOOD-RIM STEERING WHEEL”.

That steering wheel was first manufactured at the explicit request of Jaguar for use to special order on Mk 2 cars by V. W. Derrington and continued to be offered for the ‘S’-type.

C.25198 is a rarely seen option. Your Editor has seen only two in over 30 years of attending Jaguar concours and car shows.

the splined shaft is the same in the MK-2, S type, and 420. It changes to a smaller diameter spline from the 1968 XJ-6 on.

any steering wheel from any of those cars will fit on the other. But an XJ hub will not fit a MK-2, S type, or 420, the spline hole is smaller.

it is ridiculouis that these steering wheel sellers don't know this in this day and age.

Moss Motors in California sells MK-2 hubs for their line of "Tourist Trophy" steering wheels, but the hub bases are matched to their steering wheels which have 9 bolts securing the wheel to the hub, per the picture of the one in my car below.

I've never removed a Derrington so I have no idea how it attaches to the hub. They are wonderful steering wheels. You might talk with Saul at British Autowood since he restores them.
