Reclining lever positions differed on the S Type seats between early and later cars. I think you'll find the later design was carried into the 420 but it basically makes no difference to the actual fitting of the seat..

Must be the time of year for it! Mine did exactly the same thing last month. I bit the bullet on replacing with a capillary gauge and haven't looked back. The only slight problem was that the length of the rigid connector pipe on the gauge end mean't I couldn't close the centre panel quite verticall...

Firstly, it's your car so you can do as you wish. Personally, I prefer a degree of originality so would say either return it to it's original build colour or a period appropriate colour.
