Original Dunlop wheels were stamped hub (slightly deeper curl). The change to turned from billet happened during 1966 for curly hub & availability of so called "easy cleaned" or "easy cleans". Precise dates seem lost in the annals of time unless someone has a source of better information. Aston Martin seems to report similarly although they did not move to the 52mm hub until the DB6 Mkii

Hi Cass.
I've had my S type since 1987 and bearing in mind it was garaged for about 9 years before I bought it. It came with a few spare wheels, all curly hub so I suspect this 1965 model always had curly hubs.

Then MWS is the right supplier for you. That's where i got mine from. They will ship anywhere.

Just make sure you get the right wheels from their selection. If unsure phone them.

Your car needs 52mm splined hubs. 72 spoke wheels. 15"

SNG Barrat sells in FR too, and UK is closer to me, ok.
My Mechanic (retired but helps his son) Work since 40y on old Jags and others, I think I will let him do the job when it will be the moment then.

MWS (Motor Wheel Service) UK can supply all you need & I suggest you read their site.

Dayton wheels US can equally supply all.

The biggest difficulty in the change over is setting/shimming the rear wheel hubs. You will have to get shims from SNG Barratts or similar.

Front wheels are dead easy.

Especially read the MWS section on balancing centre lock wheels. Ignore Dayton ~ they are wrong and you will use more weight to balance & have trouble.

Here is again the apprentice :lol:
Completely new in pre-leyland and S type as you know. The S I will see next does not have the wire wheels. And I want to go for Wire wheels. It' a late 67MY, so these wheels should fit (chrome from the start), and the smaler spinner if I'm right ?

But a question, I assume the steel wheels are screwed like standart steels ? (around the central hub ? )And Wire W. are only screwed with the center hub (what is called spiner ?), so I guess there are some modifications to do to go on wire wheels ????

Sorry to hear that. Wheels should run true.

Presume you provided your own balancer cones for mounting on the balancer.

With some tyres I find the valve marking to be out. Sometimes pays to de-bead the tyre & rotate through 90 degrees on the rim & re balance.

Stick on weights were used but I was not impressed by the original balance of the wheels and I am in the process of complaining. Once the tyres were on the balance was all over the place and a lot of weight was needed to get them straight. So we decided to check if it was the tyre or the wheel and removed the tyre and just checked the balance of the wire wheel. his was way out and you could see the buckle in the wheel as it span on the balancer. We managed to get two wheels balanced but had to use a lot of weight and gave up on the other two so they are on the back of the car. I complained to SC Parts who I bought them off but they are MWS wheels so the complaint might go all the way back there as SC Parts just said, " What would you like us to do about it as we have never in 20 years had a complaint about the wire wheels before."
I took not just photos but Video footage of one of the wheels being balanced tyre and no tyre. We shall see what they say.

1) Spoke balancing weights
2) Stick on weights
3) Hammer on weights
